Amazing instrumental prog rock album, the sophomore release from Rob Perez and team. Visual Cliff started out as a trio on their first album 'Lyrics for the Living' but expanded to a quartet here on 'Key to Eternity'. They play instrumental fusion-prog with guitar (electric and acoustic), keys, bass and drums. (On the first album, one person handled both bass and drums.) Guitarist Rob Perez is particularly impressive, covering styles from Pat Metheny through Allan Holdsworth to Joe Satriani. The band rarely lose sight of melody and composition, keeping the music from sinking into the hundred-notes-a-second, never-the-same-thing-twice fusion quagmire. And actually, only some of Key to Eternity even qualifies as fusion; a lot of it is rock and prog rock. Some of it is heavy and crunchy, but the bits in between the heavy bits are what sets it apart, especially the tracks with acoustic guitar, which evoke summer moods and breezes.
